Applying Critical Thinking to Root Cause Analysis & Major Incidents
First Principle Thinking: How it works
First Principle Thinking (FPT): a problem-solving method where you break down complex concepts into their most basic, foundational elements (first principles) and rebuild solutions from the ground up.
Core Principles:
-
Identify the Problem or Concept: Start with the issue you want to understand or solve.
-
Break it Down to First Principles: What do we know for sure vs. what assumptions are we making?
-
Challenge Assumptions: Instead of relying on assumptions, analogies, or past experiences, it aims to question everything and focus on fundamental truths.
-
Rebuild from First Principles: Use the fundamental insights you found to reassemble a new solution.
-
Experiment and Iterate: Continue testing new solutions based on your insights, refine your approach until you reach a breakthrough.

Improving Root Cause Analysis & Problem Remediation: what we will do
Steps:
-
Create Baseline & Agree on Objectives: We will work with leadership to understand and document the As-Is environment and establish growth targets and expected timelines.
-
Critical Thinking Training: Bring the support team up to speed on Critical Thinking fundamentals and being introducing the practices into day to day activities.
-
Establish Operational Measures: Create and implement measures that quantify the progression to the agreed upon growth targets, educate the team on the collection and use of the measures.
-
Modify Existing Templates and Processes: Update the tools currently in use and optimize them to capture critical thinking principles. Conduct training and implement into use.
-
Experiment and Iterate: Continue providing feedback to the team on adoption of new skillsets. Evaluate effectiveness of process and template changes and adjust as required. Create a roadmap for action items and timelines for completion of enhancements and modifications.
